A projector lens looks like a small part on a catalog page. On a real vehicle build, it decides whether the beam is usable, legal enough for your market, and repeatable in mass production. If you are sourcing for OEM/ODM work or an aftermarket line, start with the vehicle job—not with the biggest wattage number.
Match the lens to the job, not the brochure photo
Passenger car retrofit / aftermarket kit: size compatibility matters first (2.8", 3.0", square, or special housings). You need a clean cutoff for low beam and a high beam that does not wash the road into glare.
Full headlamp ODM project: the lens is part of an optical system. Ask for photometric targets, housing interface, and how many validation loops the factory runs before tooling.
Motorcycle / off-road / commercial: vibration, heat path, and mounting geometry often matter more than “matrix” marketing language.
Brand owners selling under their own label: ask for CAD/3D support, sample stages, and whether the supplier will stay ODM-only so they are not competing with your brand downstream.
Specs worth putting on the RFQ
Beam type: low only, high only, or bi-function (high/low in one projector).
Outer diameter / form factor: round, square, or special acrylic sizes for tight housings.
Optical target: cutoff sharpness, hot spot position, and whether EMAK / regulatory light pattern checks are available.
Thermal and electrical: driver matching, LED power class, and how heat is taken out of the module.
Documentation: drawings, sample lead time, and QC checkpoints (incoming, in-process, final).
A short buying rule
If you are shipping kits to installers, prioritize fitment coverage and beam consistency across batches. If you are developing a full lamp, prioritize optical simulation, sample approval stages, and a factory that can hold the same curve after volume starts. MAOYI’s catalog covers bi-LED and special-size projectors (including square and acrylic options) for that kind of practical sourcing—use the model list as a starting point, then lock specs in writing.
